Sights

It is an important industrial and transports center, being connected by roads and railways to the largest European cities. Arad has two universities, an Orthodox theological seminary and a Conservatory. The city was certified in documents for the first time in the 11th century and fortified during the Mongol invasion of the Hungarian Kingdom in 1241.

Under the domination of the Habsburg Empire, a new fortress was built during 1763 – 1783 which played an important role in the Hungarians’ war for independence in 1849. “Aradul Nou”, located on the other side of the Mures River, is a suburb connected to the town via a bridge. The constructions erected by the Turks for the siege of the Arad fortress in the 17th century forms the nucleus of the new settlement.

Currently, the Administrative Palace hosts the Town Hall. It was built during 1872-1874, according to the architect Pekar Ferenc’s drawings. The building style combines the Flemmish neo-renaissance with the style of the late medieval town halls

The main entrance of the church is vaulted, dominated on both sides by massive columns, framing in their upper part the delved half circular frontispiece.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Arad is an Orthodox cathedral and also the headquarters for the Archbishopric of Arad. The foundation stone of the cathedral was put by Timotei Seviciu, Bishop of Arad, in 1991. The cathedral was consecrated by the Patriarch Daniel, and, in 2009, it became Archbishopric Cathedral.

The “Ioan Slavici”
Theater

The “Ioan Slavici” Classical Theater functions in one of the most impressive buildings in Arad. Due to its location, the edifice constitutes a genuine perspective of the town’s central boulevard. The imposing building was elevated in the 19th century.

The Fortress

The fortress is the town historical monument of national importance; its layout, star shaped, with six bastions, belongs among the late Vauban fortresses, also concluding the evolution of the star shaped systems in Transylvania.

The water tower has a water storage capacity of 300 mc, 34 meters in height and it was built in 1895, for the town water supply and for fire-alarms, reason why it was built nearby the firefighters’ barracks.
