The History of Arad

Arad has a long history, starting with the first human settlements built on current town grounds, on the north of Mures River. Then, in the 10th century, the first earth fortress was in Vladimirescu. The town bloomed during Maria Theresa, culminating with the construction of the fortress which was considered undefeatable at that time.

In 1918, Arad housed the National Romanian Central Council which took the leadership of Transylvania and prepared the act of the union between Transylvania and Romania at Alba Iulia. In December 1989, Arad was the second town free of communism in Romania.
